Deetlefs Wine Estate is one of South Africa’s oldest family-owned wineries, with the Deetlefs family farming in the Breedekloof Valley since 1822. Situated between mountain ranges that help regulate temperature and airflow, the region benefits from warm daytime conditions balanced by cooler evenings, allowing grapes to ripen fully while retaining freshness and structure.
The Familie range reflects the estate’s long-standing focus on approachable yet thoughtfully made wines designed for everyday enjoyment. The Familie Red 2019 is a Cape blend that brings together multiple varieties to create balance, combining ripe fruit, spice and soft tannin structure in a style that is generous without feeling heavy.
Careful oak maturation adds texture and complexity while allowing the fruit profile to remain accessible and expressive.
Colour:
Deep ruby red with garnet highlights.
Nose:
Aromas of ripe plum, black cherry and mulberry are supported by hints of mocha, sweet spice and subtle cedar oak.
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied, with layered dark berry fruit and smooth, rounded tannins. The Shiraz contributes spice and richness, while Cabernet Sauvignon adds structure and freshness. Notes of cocoa, vanilla and soft oak spice bring depth through the mid-palate without overwhelming the fruit.
Finish:
Soft and lingering, with notes of dark fruit, gentle spice and savoury oak.
