Boschendal Black Angus 2021 (Diners)
Boschendal Wine Estate, situated between Franschhoek and Stellenbosch, is one of South Africa’s oldest wine farms, with roots dating back to 1685 when French Huguenot settlers first established vineyards in the valley. Over more than three centuries, the estate has evolved into a leading Cape producer known for combining historic heritage with modern winemaking precision.
The Boschendal Black Angus 2021 forms part of the estate’s Heritage Collection and takes its name from the renowned herd of Black Angus cattle raised on the farm. The wine is built around a Shiraz core, complemented by Bordeaux varieties to create depth and structure.
Fruit is sourced primarily from vineyards in the Helderberg area of Stellenbosch, where cooling Atlantic breezes and varied slopes help moderate the warm Cape climate. Shiraz grows on south-westerly slopes overlooking False Bay, while Cabernet varieties come from granite-rich hillside sites that contribute structure and aromatic complexity.
Each variety is vinified separately before maturation in a mix of new and seasoned French oak barrels for around 14 months, followed by additional ageing in large foudres before final blending. This careful approach allows the final wine to combine the richness of Shiraz with the structure and elegance of the Bordeaux components.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a dense, vibrant core.
Nose:
Aromatic layers of ripe plum, blackberry and cassis lead, followed by winter spice, black pepper and a subtle roasted cocoa note.
Palate:
Full-bodied with a smooth yet structured texture. The palate shows mulberry, black cherry and dark berry fruit supported by fine tannins. Shiraz contributes juicy fruit and spice, while Cabernet Sauvignon adds backbone and complexity.
Finish:
Long and generous, with lingering dark fruit, oak spice and a subtle savoury edge.
- Food Pairing : The bold structure and dark fruit richness of Boschendal Black Angus 2021 make it a natural match for deeply savoury dishes. Slow-roasted beef - particularly a rib roast or braised short ribs - works beautifully as the wine’s tannins cut through the richness while its spice echoes the caramelised flavours. Grilled lamb with rosemary or thyme also pairs well, highlighting the wine’s herbal and peppery nuances. For a South African classic, smoked beef ribs or a hearty braai plate are excellent choices, while roasted vegetables such as aubergine or portobello mushrooms bring out the wine’s savoury depth.
