Benguela Cove EC Bordeaux Blend 2021 (Diners)
Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate lies near Hermanus on the edge of the Bot River Lagoon in the Walker Bay wine region. The vineyards sit just a few kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean, where cooling sea breezes and moderate temperatures create ideal conditions for slow, even ripening. This maritime influence allows grapes to develop depth of flavour while retaining freshness - an important balance for structured Bordeaux varieties.
Â
The estate works with a range of vineyard parcels planted on shale and clay-rich soils that naturally regulate vine vigour and support balanced fruit development. Careful vineyard management and selective harvesting allow each varietal component to express its site before blending.
Â
The Benguela Cove EC Bordeaux Blend 2021 (often referred to as the estateâs âCollageâ blend) reflects a classic Bordeaux philosophy. Each variety is vinified separately and matured in French oak before final blending, allowing the winemaking team to build a layered wine where Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure, Merlot adds roundness, and Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot contribute aromatic lift and depth.
Â
Colour:
Deep ruby with a vibrant core and a slight purple hue, reflecting the wineâs youthful concentration.
Â
Nose:
Aromatic layers of blackcurrant, plum and dark cherry lead the bouquet. These are joined by violet, cedar and subtle notes of graphite and spice from oak maturation.
Â
Palate:
Full-bodied with a structured but polished texture. The palate shows concentrated cassis and black cherry fruit, supported by firm yet refined tannins. Hints of cocoa, cedar and dried herbs add complexity while the wineâs natural acidity keeps the profile fresh and focused.
Â
Finish:
Long and savoury with lingering dark fruit and gentle notes of spice and graphite.
- Food Pairing : The structure and depth of Benguela Cove EC Bordeaux Blend 2021 make it well suited to rich, savoury dishes. Roast beef with garlic and herbs works particularly well, as the wineâs tannins and cassis fruit balance the richness of the meat. Lamb shank or slow-braised short ribs echo the wineâs depth and savoury character, while a mushroom risotto highlights its earthy undertones. For a simpler pairing, try it with grilled lamb chops or a mature hard cheese such as aged cheddar, which brings out the wineâs subtle oak and spice notes.
