Benguela Cove Collage 2023
Produced by Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate, the Collage range showcases the potential of Bordeaux-style blends grown in one of South Africa’s most distinctive cool-climate wine regions. Situated near Hermanus on the edge of the Bot River Lagoon and influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, the estate benefits from moderate temperatures and a long ripening season that promotes flavour development while preserving freshness. The vineyards are planted on weathered shale and iron-rich soils with high calcium content, contributing structure and complexity to the finished wine. Individual vineyard blocks are harvested and vinified separately before blending, allowing the winemaking team to create a wine that reflects both vintage character and site expression.
Colour: Deep ruby with a youthful garnet edge and excellent colour intensity.
Nose: Blackcurrant, plum and dark cherry aromas lead the bouquet, followed by notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, graphite and subtle spice from oak maturation.
Palate: Structured yet polished, showing layers of ripe black fruit supported by fine-grained tannins. The cool-climate character brings freshness and definition, while the blend offers depth, concentration and complexity without excessive weight.
Finish: Long and savoury, with lingering dark fruit, cedar, cocoa and a subtle mineral note that adds refinement.
- Food Pairing : Benguela Cove Collage 2023 is well suited to dishes that match its structure and depth. Roast lamb with rosemary, grilled rib-eye steak, beef short ribs and venison all work particularly well, as the wine’s firm tannins and dark fruit complement richly flavoured meats. For something less traditional, try it with mushroom risotto or mature hard cheeses, where the savoury notes in the wine echo the earthy, umami character of the food. The freshness typical of Walker Bay helps keep these pairings balanced rather than heavy.
