Bellevue Tumara Reserve 2020
Bellevue Wine Estate has been farmed by the Morkel family since the mid-1800s and remains one of the Cape’s most respected historic wine properties. Situated on the northern slopes of the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch, the estate is particularly well known for its role in the development of Pinotage, having planted some of the country’s earliest commercial vineyards of the variety.
The Tumara Reserve range reflects Bellevue’s more structured, cellar-worthy style, combining traditional Stellenbosch varieties with careful oak maturation and a strong focus on vineyard expression. The 2020 vintage was shaped by a relatively dry growing season, producing smaller berries with concentrated flavour and firm tannin structure.
Fruit for the blend is sourced from low-yielding vineyards grown in decomposed granite soils, with each component vinified separately before extended maturation in French oak barrels. The resulting wine balances ripe fruit richness with savoury detail and freshness - a style that feels confidently Stellenbosch without leaning too heavily on extraction or oak.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a dense garnet core.
Nose:
Dark plum, blackcurrant and ripe cherry aromas lead the nose, followed by cedar spice, tobacco leaf, mocha and subtle dried herbs. Gentle oak notes add depth without dominating the fruit.
Palate:
Full-bodied and structured, with layers of blackberry, cassis and dark chocolate supported by firm but polished tannins. The Pinotage contributes savoury depth and texture, while Cabernet Sauvignon adds backbone and freshness. Merlot softens the mid-palate, giving the wine a rounded, composed feel.
Finish:
Long and dry, with lingering notes of dark fruit, cedar and fine spice.
- Food Pairing : Bellevue Tumara Reserve 2020 is well suited to richer, slow-cooked dishes where the wine’s structure and savoury character can fully open up. Try it with roast lamb shoulder, grilled ribeye, beef short ribs or venison pie. The firm tannins work particularly well alongside fatty cuts of meat, while the dark fruit and oak spice complement smoky braai flavours and hearty winter cooking. A mature cheddar or aged Gouda also pairs beautifully with the wine’s layered, savoury finish.
