Asara Bell Tower 2019
Located in the heart of Stellenbosch, Asara Wine Estate combines historic Cape winemaking roots with a modern, terroir-focused philosophy. The estate sits across varied elevations and decomposed granite soils, creating ideal conditions for Bordeaux varietals to ripen with concentration while retaining freshness and structure.
The Bell Tower is the estate’s flagship red blend, named after the distinctive bell tower found on the property and reflected in the Asara emblem. Produced from carefully selected vineyard blocks, each varietal is vinified separately before maturation in French oak barrels for 18 months. Only the finest barrels are chosen for the final blend, resulting in a wine that reflects both Stellenbosch richness and classical restraint. Minimal cellar intervention allows the fruit and site to remain at the forefront of the wine’s character.
Colour:
Deep ruby red with a dense core and a youthful garnet edge.
Nose:
Aromas of cassis, blackberry and ripe plum lead the bouquet, followed by notes of cedar, cigar box, dark chocolate and dried herbs. Subtle vanilla and toasted oak add warmth and depth without dominating the fruit.
Palate:
Full-bodied and composed, with concentrated black fruit supported by firm but polished tannins. The blend shows layers of blackberry, mulberry and dark cherry alongside savoury graphite and spice notes. Fresh acidity keeps the wine focused and balanced, while the oak maturation contributes texture and complexity rather than sweetness.
Finish:
Long, smooth and persistent, finishing with lingering dark fruit, cedar spice and fine tannin grip.
- Food Pairing : Asara Bell Tower 2019 is particularly well suited to rich, slow-cooked and flame-grilled dishes where the wine’s structure and savoury depth can shine. It pairs naturally with roast lamb, beef fillet, or slow-braised short ribs, where the tannins soften against the richness of the meat. The blend’s dark fruit and cedar notes also complement venison pie or chargrilled mushrooms beautifully, while its freshness prevents heavier dishes from feeling overly rich. Mature hard cheeses work equally well, especially when served alongside roasted winter vegetables or smoky flavours from the braai.
