Alto MPHS 2022 (In Wooden Box)
Alto Wine Estate sits on the slopes of the Helderberg in Stellenbosch, where elevated vineyards, decomposed granite soils and cooling False Bay breezes create ideal conditions for structured red wines. Alto’s history stretches back more than a century, and the estate has long been associated with Cabernet Sauvignon-led blends that balance concentration with restraint.
The Alto MPHS 2022 - named after the initials of Alto’s previous winemakers - is only produced in vintages the estate considers worthy of a flagship release. Cabernet Franc vineyards planted in deep Hutton soils bring perfume and freshness, while Cabernet Sauvignon grown on rocky granite slopes contributes structure and depth. The grapes were hand-harvested, vinified separately and matured for 18 months in French oak before blending, resulting in a wine that feels polished and classical rather than overtly showy.
Colour:
Deep magenta with a dark ruby core and youthful purple edge.
Nose:
Cassis, blackberry and ripe plum lead the aromatics, followed by floral notes of dark rose and jasmine tea. Cedar, graphite, cigar box and cracked black pepper add layered complexity without overwhelming the fruit.
Palate:
Full-bodied yet composed, with concentrated black fruit, red cherry and subtle savoury notes moving across a finely textured palate. The tannins are firm but refined, giving the wine structure and length, while fresh acidity keeps the richness in check. Oak is present as cedar and spice rather than sweetness.
Finish:
Long, dry and persistent, finishing with graphite, dark fruit and a lingering umami edge that speaks to the wine’s cellaring potential.
- Food Pairing : The Alto MPHS 2022 works particularly well with richer dishes that can match its structure and depth. Chargrilled ribeye, rosemary lamb chops or slow-braised beef short rib all complement the wine’s firm tannins and dark fruit profile, while the savoury graphite and cedar notes sit comfortably alongside mushroom risotto or mature hard cheeses such as aged Cheddar or Gouda. The freshness from the Cabernet Franc component also helps cut through richer sauces and fatty cuts without making the pairing feel heavy.
