Allée Bleue is a historic wine estate situated in the Franschhoek Valley, where the Dauphin family has developed a diverse range of wines from vineyards across the Cape. For L'Amour Toujours, the fruit is sourced from selected mountain vineyards in the Banghoek ward of Stellenbosch, an area known for its elevation, cooler conditions and distinctive mountain terroir. This gives the wine a different expression from the warmer valley-floor vineyards around Franschhoek. L'Amour Toujours is Allée Bleue's flagship red wine and is made by winemaker Van Zyl du Toit. The wine is a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. The grapes are cooled after harvesting, carefully sorted and given a four-day cold soak before fermentation. Extended maceration builds colour, flavour and structure, followed by malolactic fermentation and 18 months of maturation in French oak. The estate's approach uses a combination of new and second-fill barrels, giving the wine depth and spice while allowing the fruit and vineyard character to remain prominent.
Colour: Deep ruby red with a mature garnet edge.
Nose: Blackberry and dark berry fruit lead the nose, accompanied by Cape fynbos, cedar and cigar-box notes. With time in the glass, subtle spice and dried-herb aromas emerge.
Palate: Full-bodied but elegantly textured, with generous blackberry and dark-fruit flavours. Dark chocolate, cinnamon and savoury spice add complexity, while soft, well-integrated tannins provide structure. The years in bottle have allowed the fruit, oak and tannins to knit together, giving the wine a more rounded and mature character.
Finish: Long and savoury, with lingering blackberry, dark chocolate, cedar and gentle spice.
- Food Pairing : The mature tannins, dark fruit and savoury spice of Allée Bleue L'Amour Toujours 2020 make it particularly well suited to slow-braised oxtail, roast lamb, confit duck, grilled rib-eye and rich beef stews. The wine's dark-fruit character works beautifully with caramelised and roasted flavours, while its savoury fynbos, cedar and spice notes complement herbs and slow-cooked dishes. For a distinctly South African pairing, an oxtail potjie with roasted or jacket sweet potatoes would be an excellent choice.
- Drink before: Cellaring potential: The estate recommends a further 5–7 years of ageing for this wine. As the 2020 is now a mature vintage, it is best enjoyed now, ideally after decanting.
