Leeu Passant The Leeu Passant Blend 2023
The Leeu Passant is the flagship red of Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines, based at Leeu Estates in Franschhoek but sourcing exceptional old and heritage vineyards from across the Cape. The wine takes its inspiration from the classic Cabernet and Cinsault blends made in South Africa during the 1950s and 1960s, reinterpreting that tradition with a modern, precise approach. For the 2023 vintage, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc come from the iron- and sandstone-rich mid-slopes of the Helderberg Mountain in Stellenbosch, while the Cinsault comes from the historic Wellington vineyard planted in 1900. The grapes are hand harvested and the wine is matured for 11 months in 500-litre French oak barrels before a further 11 months in foudre. The use of larger-format oak allows the fruit, acidity and vineyard character to remain central to the wine.
Colour: Deep ruby with a youthful garnet-purple hue.
Nose: Perfumed red berries, blackcurrant and plum lead into rose petals, violets and fresh herbs. Subtle spice, graphite and a gentle savoury character add complexity without overpowering the fruit.
Palate: Medium-bodied and remarkably poised, with layers of red and dark berries carried by fresh acidity and fine-grained tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon provides the core and structure, Cabernet Franc brings leafy herbal and floral notes, while the old-vine Cinsault contributes fragrance and brightness. The wine has plenty of underlying structure, but its power is deliberately restrained rather than imposing.
Finish: Long, dry and finely detailed, with lingering red berry, cassis, herbs, spice and a subtle mineral character.
- Food Pairing : The Leeu Passant 2023 has the freshness and fine tannins to complement richly flavoured food without overpowering it. Try it with Karoo lamb, slow-roasted beef, venison, duck or a beautifully prepared mushroom and porcini dish. Its cassis, red-fruit and herbal character works particularly well with grilled or roasted meats, while the lively acidity keeps richer dishes feeling balanced.
