Landskroon Paul Hugo Red 2025
Landskroon sits on the south-western slopes of Paarl Mountain, with a winemaking history dating back to 1874. The estate’s vineyards are planted on a combination of Malmesbury shale, decomposed granite and sandstone, with elevations ranging from approximately 157 to 278 metres. These conditions, together with Paarl’s warm growing climate, provide a natural setting for ripe, expressive red wines. The Landskroon Paul Hugo Red 2025 is named for brothers Paul and Hugo de Villiers, whose family history is deeply intertwined with the estate. The blend brings together Shiraz, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, combining ripe fruit and generosity with the savoury structure and spice that make a multi-varietal red particularly versatile at the table. The current Landskroon description presents it as a concentrated yet easy-drinking blend, while the estate continues to feature Paul Hugo Red as part of its core Paarl range. The wine also represents a new chapter for Landskroon. In 2025, Van Loveren Family Vineyards acquired the Landskroon wine brand and operational cellar, bringing the historic Paarl property into one of South Africa’s established family-owned wine groups while continuing the Landskroon identity and heritage.
Colour: Deep ruby red with youthful purple tones.
Nose: A generous mix of ripe plum and dark berry fruit leads, followed by blackberry and subtle red-fruit notes. Gentle spice and savoury nuances add complexity, with hints of vanilla and oak in the background.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied, with concentrated dark fruit balanced by supple tannins and refreshing acidity. Shiraz brings ripe berry richness and spice, while Cabernet Franc contributes structure and savoury character and Merlot rounds out the blend with softness and plum-like fruit. The result is smooth, approachable and easy to enjoy without sacrificing character.
Finish: Pleasantly persistent, with dark berry and plum flavours followed by a gentle spicy note and soft tannins.
- Food Pairing : The Landskroon Paul Hugo Red 2025 is particularly well suited to relaxed, flavourful South African food. Try it with a juicy burger, a traditional boerewors roll, lamb curry pie, or roast spatchcock chicken. It also works beautifully with a braai, where the wine’s ripe fruit and gentle spice complement smoky, charred flavours, while its moderate tannins provide enough structure for red meat without making the pairing feel heavy. The estate itself recommends the blend with burgers, boerie rolls, lamb curry pie and roasted spatchcock chicken.
