Hartenberg Doorkeeper SGM 2023
Hartenberg Wine Estate lies on the north-eastern slopes of the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch, where a Mediterranean climate, varied vineyard elevations and diverse soils help shape the character of its wines. With a winemaking history stretching back centuries, Hartenberg is particularly well known for its dedication to Shiraz and its careful approach to expressing the Stellenbosch landscape. The Hartenberg Doorkeeper SGM 2023 brings together three classic Rhône varieties: Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvèdre. Each contributes something different to the blend - Shiraz provides structure and depth, Grenache adds fresh red-fruit character, and Mourvèdre lends a silky texture. The Doorkeeper range is designed for approachable, everyday enjoyment, while retaining the estate's attention to detail. The 2023 blend matured for 15 months in older French oak barrels, allowing the fruit to remain central while adding subtle complexity.
Colour: Deep ruby red with a youthful, vibrant appearance.
Nose: Ripe blackcurrant and black cherry lead, with hints of floral perfume and fresh strawberry from the Grenache. A gentle layer of spice adds interest without dominating the fruit.
Palate: Medium-bodied and approachable, with juicy raspberry and black cherry flavours supported by gentle cinnamon spice. The Grenache brings freshness, while Shiraz provides structure and Mourvèdre contributes a smooth, silky mouthfeel. Fine, well-integrated tannins give the wine shape without making it feel heavy.
Finish: Smooth and polished, with lingering dark cherry, berry fruit and a delicate savoury spice note.
- Food Pairing : Hartenberg Doorkeeper SGM 2023 works well with grilled lamb chops, boerewors off the braai, beef burgers, tomato-based pasta or a mildly spiced chicken dish. Its juicy berry fruit complements grilled and roasted flavours, while the moderate tannins and fresh acidity keep the wine approachable alongside everyday meals. The gentle spice also makes it a good match for dishes seasoned with rosemary, black pepper or paprika.
