Hartenberg Doorkeeper Merlot Malbec 2023
Hartenberg Wine Estate is situated on the north-eastern slopes of the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch. Its vineyards benefit from the Western Cape's Mediterranean climate, while the estate's long winemaking history and focus on working with nature help shape wines with a clear sense of place. Hartenberg is particularly well known for its Shiraz, but its broader range also showcases the versatility of other classic varieties. The Hartenberg Doorkeeper Merlot Malbec 2023 combines two Bordeaux varieties in an approachable red blend. Merlot provides a supple texture and elegance, while Malbec contributes vibrant fruit, deeper colour and additional structure. Part of Hartenberg's Doorkeeper range, the wine is designed for everyday enjoyment without losing the estate's emphasis on quality. The range's distinctive label features symbols inspired by farm life, including an Ankole bull, clover, a sugarbird and the entrance to Hartenberg's underground wine cellar.
Colour: Ruby red with a youthful, vibrant appearance.
Nose: Delicate floral aromas of violet mingle with fresh strawberry and raspberry, followed by hints of ripe plum and darker berry fruit.
Palate: Medium-bodied and smooth, with juicy red berries and ripe plum at the forefront. Merlot brings a silky, rounded mouthfeel, while Malbec adds depth and structure. Fine, velvety tannins provide gentle grip without making the wine feel heavy, keeping the fruit expressive and approachable.
Finish: Smooth and lingering, with fresh berry flavours, soft plum notes and a gentle, savoury edge.
- Food Pairing : Hartenberg Doorkeeper Merlot Malbec 2023 pairs comfortably with juicy beef burgers, mushroom pizza, grilled lamb chops or a simple beef lasagne. Its ripe berry and plum flavours complement grilled meat and tomato-based sauces, while the soft tannins keep the wine easy to enjoy alongside everyday meals. For a vegetarian option, try it with roasted mushrooms or a mushroom and lentil pie, where the earthy flavours work well with the wine's fruit and gentle structure.
