Chamonix Rouge 2022
The Chamonix Rouge 2022 is produced by Chamonix Wine Farm, a historic estate tucked against the slopes of the Mont Rochelle mountains in Franschhoek. Originally part of the Huguenot farm La Cotte, granted in the late 1600s, the property today spans around 300 hectares with roughly 50 hectares planted to vine.
Under owner Chris Hellinger and winemaker Neil Bruwer, Chamonix focuses on wines that express the estate’s mountain-influenced terroir. The vineyards benefit from stony, clay-rich soils and cooling breezes descending from the surrounding mountains, which help moderate the warm valley climate and preserve freshness in the fruit.
The Rouge is Chamonix’s approachable Bordeaux-style blend, made from estate-grown grapes. After hand-harvesting and careful sorting, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks with regular pumping over the skins to build structure and colour. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation and matures in older French oak barrels for around 12–18 months, allowing the blend to integrate while keeping the fruit expression clear.
The result is a structured but accessible red that reflects both the classic Bordeaux varieties and the character of Franschhoek’s mountain vineyards.
Colour:
Deep ruby with garnet flashes at the rim, showing good depth and clarity in the glass.
Nose:
Expressive aromas of blackcurrant and dark plum lead the bouquet, followed by layers of red berries, vanilla and gentle spice from oak maturation.
Palate:
Medium-to-full bodied with rounded tannins and a smooth texture. Flavours of blackcurrant, mulberry and ripe plum sit alongside subtle cedar and spice, giving the wine structure while maintaining approachability.
Finish:
Long and softly structured, with lingering dark fruit and a touch of savoury oak spice.
- Food Pairing : The structure and dark-fruit profile of Chamonix Rouge 2022 make it an easy match for hearty, flavourful dishes. It pairs particularly well with grilled beef steak or a classic South African braai, where the wine’s tannins complement the richness of the meat. Roast lamb with garlic and rosemary works beautifully, echoing the wine’s savoury herbal notes, while slow-cooked beef stew or oxtail highlights the wine’s depth and soft texture. For something lighter, roast chicken with root vegetables or mushroom-based dishes bring out the blend’s earthy undertones while the acidity keeps the pairing balanced.
