Cape Point Vineyards Reserve Red 2023
Cape Point Vineyards sits high on the slopes above Noordhoek on the Cape Peninsula, just a few kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean. It is the only winery in the Cape Point district, where vineyards benefit from a rare maritime environment shaped by the meeting of cool Atlantic breezes and the winds sweeping across False Bay. This combination slows the ripening process and preserves natural acidity, allowing wines to develop concentration while maintaining freshness.
Â
The vineyards lie on the mountain slopes below Chapmanâs Peak, where soils of decomposed granite, limestone and kaolin contribute both structure and a distinctive mineral character to the wines.
Â
The Cape Point Vineyards Reserve Red 2023 reflects the estateâs approach to classic Bordeaux-style blending. Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure and depth, Merlot adds roundness and fruit, and Cabernet Franc contributes aromatic lift. Each component is vinified separately before maturation in French oak, allowing the final blend to express both the cool coastal terroir and the estateâs careful winemaking philosophy.
Â
Colour:
Deep ruby with a vibrant core and youthful purple edge.
Â
Nose:
Blackcurrant and dark cherry lead the aromatics, followed by hints of plum, cedar and graphite. Subtle notes of dried herbs and oak spice add complexity.
Â
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied with firm but polished tannins. The palate shows cassis, blackberry and plum supported by fresh acidity typical of the coastal Cape Peninsula. Gentle oak influence adds notes of cocoa, cedar and spice.
Â
Finish:
Long and structured, with lingering dark fruit, savoury herbs and a subtle mineral edge.
- Food Pairing : The structure and savoury depth of Cape Point Vineyards Reserve Red 2023 make it a natural partner for robust dishes. Roast lamb with rosemary works particularly well, as the wineâs herbal notes echo the seasoning while the tannins balance the richness of the meat. A grilled ribeye steak or classic South African braai also complements the wineâs cassis and spice profile. For something slightly lighter, try it with mushroom risotto or roasted aubergine dishes, where the wineâs freshness and subtle earthiness enhance the savoury flavours.
