Boplaas Gamka Reserve 2021
Boplaas Family Vineyards, nestled in the rugged Klein Karoo near Calitzdorp, is one of South Africa’s historic wine estates, with roots tracing back to 1880. Here, a semi-arid climate, ancient alluvial soils and dramatic diurnal temperature shifts favour the cultivation of hardy Portuguese grape varieties. The Gamka Reserve 2021 is part of Boplaas’s Portuguese Collection - a portfolio that showcases the potential of Touriga Nacional alongside carefully chosen Rhône-like varieties such as Shiraz. Winemakers blend traditional vineyard practices with gentle vinification - hand harvesting, lagar fermentation and judicious oak ageing - to produce wines that combine structure, intensity and a distinctive sense of place.
Colour: Deep, inky purple-ruby that suggests concentration and depth.
Nose: Rich blackberries and macerated dark fruit greet the nose, intertwined with savoury fynbos, violet perfume and a touch of wood spice that adds complexity.
Palate: Full-bodied and layered, the palate reveals a core of concentrated black plum, tart red currant and gentle savoury notes. Firm but refined tannins provide structure, while subtle oak support and earthy undertones keep the fruit vibrant and balanced.
Finish: The finish is savoury and long, with lingering dark fruit, spice and fynbos-like complexity that calls for food or slow contemplation.
- Food Pairing : Boplaas Gamka Reserve 2021 is built for hearty, flavourful pairings. Its structured tannins and vibrant acidity cut through richly seasoned red meats — think slow-braised Karoo lamb shank with rosemary and garlic or a robust venison potjie with earthy root vegetables. Mature cheeses with depth, such as aged cheddar or a spicy blue-veined variety, also complement the wine’s dark fruit and savoury spice notes. For a South African braai twist, try it alongside flame-grilled beef sosaties or game sausages - the wine’s complexity stands up to smoky char and spice without overwhelming the palate.
