Bellevue Atticus 2023
Bellevue Wine Estate lies in the Bottelary Hills of Stellenbosch, one of the Cape’s most consistent red-wine growing areas. The slopes here benefit from cooling maritime influence from False Bay and soils rich in granite and shale, conditions that help develop ripe fruit while preserving structure and freshness in the wines.
Bellevue has long been associated with Pinotage and remains one of the Cape’s historic custodians of the variety. The Atticus blend reflects that heritage while incorporating classic Bordeaux varieties to build complexity and depth. Pinotage forms the heart of the wine, supported by Cabernet Sauvignon for structure and Petit Verdot for colour and aromatic lift. Grapes are harvested by hand, fermented with regular pump-overs to extract colour and flavour, and matured for roughly eleven months in a combination of French and American oak before blending. The result is a modern Cape Blend that balances fruit generosity with firm, age-worthy structure.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a dense purple core, showing youthful concentration in the glass.
Nose:
Ripe plum, blackberry and dark cherry lead the aromatics, followed by hints of vanilla, cedar and subtle baking spice from oak maturation.
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied with generous dark berry fruit supported by firm but approachable tannins. Pinotage brings richness and texture, while Cabernet Sauvignon adds structure and a savoury edge. Subtle oak contributes notes of vanilla and spice without dominating the fruit.
Finish:
Smooth and lingering, with dark plum, gentle oak spice and soft tannins carrying through the final impression.
- Food Pairing : The structure and dark fruit profile of Bellevue Atticus 2023 make it well suited to hearty, flavourful dishes. It pairs particularly well with slow-cooked lamb shank or a lamb potjie, where the wine’s tannins cut through the richness of the meat. A grilled steak with rosemary and garlic also works beautifully, as the savoury flavours echo the wine’s subtle spice. For something more casual, try it with a smoky braai burger or beef brisket, where the ripe fruit and gentle oak complement charred, caramelised flavours.
