Anco Spontaan 2023
Anco Wines is a small, independent South African label founded by winemaker Janco de Kock, focused on expressive blends that prioritise balance, drinkability and vineyard character. Rather than relying on a single estate, the winery sources fruit from carefully selected vineyards across the Western Cape, allowing the final blend to reflect both site diversity and thoughtful winemaking.
Â
The name âSpontaanâ reflects the philosophy behind the wine - an intuitive, natural approach to blending Mediterranean grape varieties. Syrah forms the backbone, supported by Grenache for lifted fruit and brightness, while smaller portions of MourvĂšdre, Carignan, Cinsault and Alicante Bouschet contribute structure, colour and savoury detail.
Â
Produced in a RhĂŽne-inspired style, the focus is on purity of fruit, gentle extraction and restrained oak influence, resulting in a red blend that emphasises freshness, texture and approachability rather than weight.
Â
Colour:
Bright ruby with a youthful purple edge, clear and vibrant in the glass.
Â
Nose:
Ripe red cherry and blackberry lead the aromatics, followed by hints of wild herbs, cracked pepper and subtle floral lift. Gentle notes of dried cranberry and spice emerge with air.
Â
Palate:
Medium-bodied and lively. Juicy red and black berry fruit sits at the centre, framed by fine, grippy tannins and fresh acidity. The Syrah brings peppery depth while Grenache adds brightness and lift, with savoury undertones developing across the palate.
Â
Finish:
Clean and persistent, with lingering red fruit, soft spice and a touch of Mediterranean herbs.
- Food Pairing : The bright fruit and savoury spice of Anco Spontaan 2023 make it an excellent partner for flavourful but not overly heavy dishes. It pairs naturally with lamb chops on the braai with rosemary, where the wineâs Syrah pepperiness echoes the seasoning. Slow-roasted pork belly or beef short ribs work well too, as the juicy fruit cuts through the richness of the meat. For a lighter pairing, mushroom risotto or roasted Mediterranean vegetables highlight the wineâs herbal and savoury nuances while allowing the vibrant fruit to remain centre stage.
