Rietvallei Red Muscadel 2019
Rietvallei Wine Estate is a historic family-owned estate in the Robertson Wine Valley, where the Burger family has farmed since 1864. The estate has a particularly strong connection with Red Muscadel, having produced the wine commercially since 1975. Today, owner-winemaker Kobus Burger continues the family tradition, with Rietvallei's vineyards benefiting from lime-rich, well-drained soils and the warm, dry conditions of the Robertson region. The Rietvallei Red Muscadel 2019 is made from 100% Muscat de Frontignan, from vines planted in 2001 in calcareous soil. The grapes were hand-harvested at 28° Balling and fermented on their skins for two days to extract colour and flavour. Once natural fermentation began, the wine was fortified with pure wine spirits and left on its lees before further maturation. This traditional fortified-wine approach allows the naturally aromatic Muscat fruit to retain its character while developing greater richness and complexity.
Colour: Deep garnet-red with a youthful ruby edge.
Nose: A distinctly floral Muscat bouquet leads into aromas of raisins and ripe red berries, with a gentle sweetness that is immediately apparent but not cloying.
Palate: Full-bodied, rich and generously sweet, with concentrated raisin, red-fruit and Muscat flavours. The texture is smooth and luscious, while bright acidity provides an important counterpoint to the wine's sweetness, keeping the palate fresh rather than heavy.
Finish: Long and intense, with lingering raisin, ripe red fruit and floral Muscat notes, followed by a refreshing line of acidity.
- Food Pairing : Rietvallei Red Muscadel 2019 is naturally suited to desserts and rich cheeses. Try it with a chocolate tart, chocolate mousse, strawberries and ice cream, or a selection of mature cheeses. The wine's intense sweetness works particularly well with desserts that have enough richness to match it, while its acidity prevents the pairing from becoming overly heavy. It can also be enjoyed chilled as an aperitif, or served over ice with fresh strawberries for a more relaxed summer option.
- Drink before: Cellaring potential: Drinking beautifully now, with the balance of sweetness and acidity giving it the potential to mature further.
