Opstal Dessert Muscat 375ml
Opstal Estate is a seventh-generation family-run farm situated at the foot of the Slanghoek mountains in the Breedekloof Wine Valley. The combination of mountain surroundings, a warm growing climate and the estate's long viticultural heritage provides an ideal setting for producing richly flavoured Hanepoot. The Louw family has farmed at Opstal for generations, with the estate's winemaking history stretching back to 1950. The Opstal Dessert Muscat is made from 100% Muscat dâAlexandrie, sourced from a bush-vine vineyard planted in 1987. The hand-picked grapes receive 12 hours of skin contact before fermentation is stopped by fortification with grape spirit, preserving the variety's intensely perfumed character. The wine then spends 12 months in a 300-litre French oak barrel, adding subtle nuttiness and complexity while allowing the naturally rich fruit to remain at the centre.
Colour: Rich golden yellow with an amber hue, reflecting its concentration and time in oak.
Nose: Highly aromatic, with classic Muscat perfume alongside sweet citrus, orange blossom and ripe floral notes. Hints of dried fruit and subtle nuttiness emerge with time in the glass.
Palate: Rich and naturally sweet, with layers of sweet citrus, ripe stone fruit and floral Muscat flavours. Despite its generous 178 g/L residual sugar, the wine is not overly heavy, with fresh acidity providing lift and keeping the sweetness focused. Twelve months in French oak adds a gentle nuttiness and savoury complexity to the finish.
Finish: Long, smooth and warmly persistent, with sweet citrus, floral Muscat and delicate nutty notes lingering on the palate. Its combination of sweetness and freshness gives it the structure to develop beautifully with age.
- Food Pairing : The wine's pronounced sweetness and aromatic character make it particularly good with desserts that have enough richness or acidity to balance it. Try it with crÚme brûlée, lemon tart, baked cheesecake, fruit-based desserts or a mature blue cheese. The citrus freshness helps cut through creamy desserts, while the floral, honeyed and nutty notes complement both ripe fruit and stronger cheeses. It is also enjoyable simply chilled as an after-dinner wine.
