Thelema Riesling 2018
Thelema Mountain Vineyards sits high on the slopes of the Simonsberg in Stellenbosch, where elevation, decomposed granite soils and cooling mountain breezes combine to create a more restrained, classical style of wine. While the estate is best known for Cabernet Sauvignon, its white wines - particularly Riesling - reflect the same philosophy: clarity, balance and longevity.
Fruit for Thelema Riesling is sourced from established vineyards, with careful attention to picking decisions that preserve natural acidity while allowing flavour development. The winemaking is deliberately gentle, favouring cool fermentation and minimal handling to retain aromatics and precision. The result is a Riesling that leans toward a European-inspired style, balancing subtle sweetness with freshness and mineral structure.
Colour:
Pale straw with a bright green tint.
Nose:
Lemon zest, lime and citrus blossom lead, followed by hints of green apple and a subtle stony minerality.
Palate:
Light- to medium-bodied with a gentle off-dry touch. Crisp acidity frames flavours of lemon, white peach and green apple, giving the wine both freshness and a soft, rounded edge.
Finish:
Clean and refreshing, with lingering citrus and a fine mineral note.
- Food Pairing : Thelema Riesling 2018 is particularly versatile thanks to its balance of acidity and gentle sweetness. It works beautifully with lightly spiced dishes such as Cape Malay curry or Thai-style chicken, where the touch of residual sugar softens heat. It also pairs well with grilled chicken, fresh salads or sushi, as the citrus-driven freshness lifts lighter flavours while the wine’s texture adds just enough weight to hold its own.
