Rietvallei John B Merlot 2024
Rietvallei Wine Estate is a historic, family-owned estate in the Robertson Wine Valley, where the Burger family has been farming since 1864. The estate's generations of experience are particularly evident in its understanding of the region's calcareous soils and warm, dry growing conditions, while its cellar combines traditional hands-on winemaking with practical modern techniques. The John B Merlot 2024 comes from vineyards planted in 2019 in rich, calcareous soils. The grapes were harvested at optimum ripeness and allowed to ferment naturally using wild yeast. After fermentation, the wine remained on its skins before being racked and lightly pressed. A portion was matured for 12 months in older 300-litre French oak barrels, while the remainder was matured in tank with French oak staves. This approach gives the wine a gentle oak influence while keeping the naturally soft, fruity character of Merlot at the forefront.
Colour: Bright ruby red with youthful purple tones.
Nose: Attractive aromas of red berries lead the way, with ripe strawberry and red cherry characters supported by subtle vanilla and toasted oak.
Palate: Smooth and medium-bodied, with juicy red berry fruit and a soft, rounded texture. The tannins are gentle and supple, making the wine immediately approachable, while a touch of toasted oak adds depth without overwhelming the fruit.
Finish: Clean and pleasantly lingering, with ripe red berries and a subtle toasted-oak note.
- Food Pairing : The soft tannins and juicy red-fruit character of Rietvallei John B Merlot 2024 make it particularly versatile with burgers, grilled steak, roast chicken, pizza and pasta with tomato-based sauces. Its gentle oak and rounded texture complement grilled and roasted flavours, while the fresh berry character works naturally with savoury tomato sauces and lightly charred meats. Rietvallei also recommends red meats, pizza and pasta as natural partners.
