Rainbows End Banghoek Red Blend 2025
Rainbow's End is a family-run estate in the Banghoek Valley of Stellenbosch, with vineyards rising to around 540 metres above sea level on slopes backed by the Jonkershoek Mountain and overlooking the Banghoek basin. This high-lying, mountainous setting creates a distinctive growing environment, with elevation, cooler conditions and varied soils contributing freshness and character to the fruit. The Malan family has been farming and making wine at Rainbow's End with a focus on expressing the character of their site rather than imposing a fixed style on every vintage. The Banghoek Red Blend is made from grapes grown on slopes facing the Banghoek kloof, capturing the distinctive character of this mountain terroir. The 2025 blend combines Merlot, Shiraz, Malbec and Petit Verdot, bringing together ripe fruit, spice and structure in a distinctly Stellenbosch red blend.
Colour: Deep ruby-red with youthful purple highlights.
Nose: Aromas of ripe black cherries, plums and blueberries lead into darker berry fruit, with hints of spice, vanilla and subtle oak adding complexity.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied, with generous dark-fruit flavours and a supple, rounded texture. Merlot brings softness and plum richness, while Shiraz and Malbec contribute darker fruit and spice. Petit Verdot adds structure, giving the wine a firm but approachable backbone without making it feel overly heavy.
Finish: Smooth and moderately long, with lingering black fruit, gentle spice and a subtle savoury note.
- Food Pairing : The Rainbow's End Banghoek Red Blend 2025 has enough fruit and supple structure to work particularly well with South African favourites such as grilled steak, lamb chops and boerewors, while its darker fruit and gentle spice also suit slow-roasted lamb, beef burgers or a rich mushroom pasta. The wine's freshness keeps richer dishes in check, while its generous fruit complements the charred, savoury flavours of the braai.
- Drink before: Cellaring potential: Best enjoyed over the next few years, although the wine's fruit, structure and freshness should allow it to develop further in bottle.
