Neil Ellis Whitehall Chardonnay Elgin 2022
Neil Ellis Wines is a name synonymous with South African quality, built on decades of passionate winemaking and an early belief in planting cool-climate vineyards. The Whitehall Chardonnay comes from vineyards near the Whitehall farm in Elgin - one of the Cape’s coolest viticultural districts, shaped by ocean-cooled breezes and mineral-rich sandstone and quartz soils. This terroir brings natural acidity and precise fruit expression to the grapes. Winemaking here is thoughtful rather than flamboyant: whole-cluster pressing, barrel fermentation in fine French oak and judicious malolactic influence allow the site’s purity to come through. The result is a Chardonnay with both energy and depth, expressing Elgin’s unique sense of place with clarity and balance.
Colour: Soft straw-gold with delicate pale green highlights, clear and inviting.
Nose: Bright citrus zest leads, joined by white nectarine, lemon blossom and acacia flower, with a flinty mineral undertow and subtle hints of hazelnut and toasted oak adding complexity.
Palate: Medium-bodied with a taut mineral spine and vibrant citrus and stone fruit core. The interplay of cool-site acidity and gentle creaminess from oak and partial malolactic fermentation gives texture without heaviness, while finely knit oak frames the fruit.
Finish: Persistent and refined, with lingering citrus peel and mineral resonance that leaves a fresh, satisfying impression.
- Food Pairing : Neil Ellis Whitehall Chardonnay Elgin 2022 pairs beautifully with dishes that match its vibrant acidity and textural balance. Think grilled salmon with a lemon-herb butter - the wine’s citrus core echoes the dish while cutting through its richness. A creamy seafood linguine or shellfish in a light cream sauce will sing alongside the wine’s mineral tension and oak complexity. For a heartier choice, roast chicken with a subtle herb gravy complements the Chardonnay’s structure and rounded texture. Finally, a platter of soft, mild cheeses with fresh orchard fruit works just as well, letting the wine’s harmony and freshness shine.
