Delaire Graff E.Banghoek Res Merlot 2023 (Top 10)
Delaire Graff Estate sits high on the slopes of the Helshoogte Pass in Stellenbosch's Banghoek Valley, where elevation, mountain influences and cooler conditions help create wines with freshness alongside concentration. The Banghoek Reserve Merlot comes from some of the estate's oldest Merlot vineyards, making it a particularly focused expression of the variety and its Stellenbosch home. Estate winemaker Morné Vrey combines classical winemaking techniques with a modern approach to precision and elegance. The Banghoek Reserve Merlot is a single-vineyard wine and is matured in French oak, with the estate's published information describing 80% new French oak and 16 months of maturation for the wine.
Colour: Deep ruby-red with a dark, youthful core.
Nose: Rich aromas of dark plum, blackberry and black cherry lead into subtle notes of spice and oak, adding depth without overwhelming the ripe fruit character.
Palate: Full-bodied and generously textured, with layers of ripe berry and dark-fruit flavours supported by fine, silky tannins. The oak contributes gentle spice and savoury depth, while the wine retains enough freshness to keep its considerable weight focused. The structure gives it both immediate appeal and the potential to gain further complexity with bottle age.
Finish: Long and polished, with lingering dark fruit, spice and fine-grained tannins. The finish is persistent without feeling heavy.
- Food Pairing : The generous fruit and fine tannins make this Merlot a natural partner for grilled or slow-roasted red meats, particularly beef fillet, sirloin or lamb. It would also work beautifully with venison, a rich mushroom pasta or a hearty beef stew, where the wine's dark fruit and gentle oak spice complement savoury flavours while its freshness keeps richer dishes from becoming too heavy. For a simpler South African pairing, try it with a well-seasoned lamb chop or gourmet burger.
- Drink before: Cellaring potential: Suitable for further bottle maturation; the wine's concentration and structure should allow it to develop additional complexity over the medium term.
