Founded in 1682, Blaauwklippen is one of Stellenbosch's historic wine estates, set among the granite boulders and mountain slopes of the Stellenbosch winelands. The Blaauwklippen DBX Bordeaux Blend 2022, also known as De Blaauwe Klip, draws fruit from five Bordeaux varieties grown on the estate in the Stellenbosch Golden Triangle. Vineyard sites range from higher-potential Tukulu soils to poorer Klapmuts soils, bringing together different expressions of fruit, structure and minerality. The 2022 DBX is a five-variety Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Merlot. Each variety was vinified separately, with handpicked grapes fermented in French oak casks and stainless-steel tanks. Extended skin contact of around 14–18 days was followed by malolactic fermentation and 18 months of maturation in French oak, including 36% first-fill barrels. The result is a serious, structured red with plenty of richness, but the emphasis remains on fruit, texture and freshness rather than overt oak. The Blaauwklippen DBX Bordeaux Blend 2022 represents the more ambitious side of this historic Stellenbosch estate. It is a wine with the concentration and structure to reward cellaring, but with enough plush fruit and polished tannins to make it enjoyable now with substantial food.
Colour: Deep, opaque ruby-garnet with excellent concentration and youthful depth.
Nose: Dark cassis and ripe blueberry lead, followed by plush plum, dark chocolate and subtle cigar-box notes. Floral spice and gentle savoury nuances add complexity, giving the wine a layered rather than purely fruit-driven aromatic profile.
Palate: Full-bodied and richly textured, with concentrated blackcurrant, cassis, blueberry and plum supported by fresh acidity and velvety fruit tannins. The palate has a creamy entry and substantial mid-palate weight, while the combination of Cabernet varieties, Malbec and Petit Verdot provides structure and depth. French oak adds restrained notes of dark chocolate, spice and cigar box without overwhelming the fruit.
Finish: Long, vibrant and savoury, with dark berry fruit, chocolate and floral spice lingering alongside polished tannins and a fine freshness.

Try it with slow-roasted beef, a beautifully grilled rib-eye, lamb shank, venison or a rich beef casserole. The wine's cassis, plum and chocolate character works particularly well with caramelised and smoky flavours, while its freshness prevents richer dishes from becoming too heavy. Blaauwklippen specifically recommends the wine with serious venison dishes, making game an especially natural South African pairing.
