Blaauwklippen Chenin Blanc 2026
Founded in 1682, Blaauwklippen is one of Stellenbosch's historic wine estates, set among the granite-rich soils and mountain slopes of the Stellenbosch winelands. The Blaauwklippen Chenin Blanc 2026 comes from vineyards in the Helderberg area of Stellenbosch, where the combination of warm days and the influence of the surrounding mountains helps the grapes develop ripe fruit while retaining freshness. The grapes are hand harvested and chilled overnight before being whole-bunch pressed into stainless-steel tanks. Fermentation takes place at cool temperatures using wild/natural yeasts, followed by a month of extended lees contact with regular stirring. This cellar approach adds a pleasingly lush texture while keeping the wine fresh and fruit-driven, with no need for oak to provide richness. The Blaauwklippen Chenin Blanc 2026 is a particularly approachable expression of Stellenbosch Chenin Blanc: ripe enough to offer generous peach and tropical fruit, but with sufficient acidity to keep the palate lively. It is part of Blaauwklippen's Estate Range and sits comfortably alongside the estate's Sauvignon Blanc as a fresh, food-friendly white.
Colour: Pale straw with a bright, youthful appearance.
Nose: Yellow peach and quince lead the aromatic profile, followed by pineapple, fresh lemon zest and delicate yellow flowers. There is a subtle savoury, straw-like nuance that adds interest without taking away from the fruit.
Palate: Fresh and creamy in texture, with ripe peach and quince at the centre and pineapple and citrus adding brightness. The month of lees contact gives the wine a soft, rounded feel, while the natural acidity keeps it refreshing rather than heavy. At 4 g/L residual sugar, there is a gentle softness to the fruit without making the wine feel overtly sweet.
Finish: Smooth, elegant and refreshing, with lingering lemon zest, stone fruit and a delicate floral note.
- Food Pairing : The fresh acidity, creamy texture and ripe fruit of Blaauwklippen Chenin Blanc 2026 make it an easy match for lighter meals and summer cooking. Try it with grilled chicken from the braai, a creamy mushroom risotto, grilled prawns, fresh fish or a salad with goat's cheese. The wine's citrus freshness cuts through creamy dishes, while its peach and pineapple character works particularly well with lightly charred chicken, seafood and the savoury richness of mushrooms. Blaauwklippen also specifically recommends the Chenin Blanc with braai chicken and mushroom risotto.
