Boplaas Cabernet Sauvignon 2023

Boplaas Family Vineyards is a longstanding, multi-generational Cape producer best known for its fortified wines and brandies, with a respected range of approachable table wines as well. The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon comes from old clonal blocks planted between 1989 and 1994, harvested by hand and fermented in open-top cement fermenters to retain varietal aromatics. After fermentation the wine is matured for about 10 months in older French oak barrels and oak alternatives, softening tannins and adding discreet spice without overt oak influence. The result is a medium-bodied, everyday Cabernet that showcases red and black fruit with subtle fynbos nuances - a trustworthy and food-friendly claret style from the Western Cape. Colour: Bright ruby with clarity and youthful hue in the glass. Nose: Aromas of red currant and tart raspberry lead, accompanied by bright yet subtle spice notes. Beneath the primary fruit there are gentle hints of fynbos herbs and dried herbs, with touches of sweet vanilla in the background. Palate: Medium-bodied, with vibrant red fruit flavours supported by moderate tannins and crisp acidity. The fruit remains front and centre, while oak notes offer a soft savoury spice without overwhelming the core fruit. Finish: Clean and easy-drinking, finishing with lingering red berry notes and soft spice - a Cabernet made for everyday enjoyment.
