Boplaas Red Muscadel 2025
Boplaas Family Vineyards has been producing wine and spirits in Calitzdorp since 1880, and its dry Klein Karoo surroundings are particularly well suited to fortified and naturally sweet wines. The estate's Red Muscadel is made from a vineyard selection of Muscadel, a variety that is becoming increasingly rare. The warm, dry conditions of the Klein Karoo help the grapes reach the high natural ripeness needed for this richly flavoured style. For Boplaas Red Muscadel 2025, the fruit was hand harvested at 27°B from vines yielding around 5 tons per hectare. Traditional vinification includes two days of skin contact in a lagar, with frequent manual pigeage to gently extract colour, flavour and texture. No wood ageing is used, keeping the focus on the naturally expressive Muscadel fruit.
Colour: Deep red at the centre with a vivid pomegranate-pink edge.
Nose: Fragrant aromas of ripe Muscat grapes, raspberry, tart cranberry and mulberry mingle with rooibos tea, Turkish delight and warm spice. A gentle honeyed note adds richness beneath the bright red-fruit character.
Palate: Luscious and richly sweet, with flavours of ripe Muscat, raspberry, mulberry and cranberry joined by Turkish delight, honey and spice. Despite the considerable sweetness, lively acidity gives the wine a refreshing lift and keeps the palate energetic rather than heavy.
Finish: Long and lingering, with sweet red berries, ripe Muscat, honey and bright spice, followed by a refreshing thread of acidity.
- Food Pairing : Boplaas Red Muscadel 2025 is best served well chilled and works beautifully with the sweet, spicy and aromatic flavours of Cape Malay cuisine, as well as Thai and other gently fiery Asian dishes. Its high natural sweetness and lively acidity also make it a natural partner for desserts such as chocolate tart, berry cheesecake, crème brûlée or vanilla ice cream. For a savoury contrast, try it with a selection of strong or salty cheeses, where the sweetness provides a particularly appealing counterpoint.
