Boplaas 20YO Coheita Tawny
Boplaas Family Vineyards, situated in Calitzdorp in the Klein Karoo, has become one of South Africa’s most respected producers of fortified wines and Portuguese grape varieties. The Nel family has been farming in the region for generations, with a strong focus on traditional cellar practices and wines that reflect both heritage and regional identity.
The dry Klein Karoo climate, warm days and cooling evening temperatures create excellent conditions for producing concentrated fortified wines with freshness and structure. Boplaas 20-Year-Old Coheita Tawny is crafted from carefully selected vintages matured for extended periods in old oak barrels, allowing slow oxidative ageing to develop depth, complexity and texture over time.
The wine follows the Portuguese Coheita style, meaning it is vintage-dated and matured in cask for many years before release. This long maturation softens the spirit character while building layers of caramel, roasted nuts, dried fruit and spice.
Colour:
Deep amber-tawny with copper highlights and a polished mahogany edge.
Nose:
Complex aromas of toasted almond, walnut and pecan lead into layers of dried fig, raisin, orange peel and burnt sugar. Hints of cinnamon, old oak and subtle tobacco add further depth.
Palate:
Rich and silky, with concentrated flavours of caramelised nuts, toffee, dried apricot and dark marmalade balanced by vibrant acidity. The extended oak ageing brings savoury complexity and a smooth, integrated spirit character that carries through the palate without heaviness.
Finish:
Long, warming and layered, with lingering notes of roasted nuts, citrus peel, spice and caramel.
- Food Pairing : Boplaas 20 Year Old Coheita Tawny pairs beautifully with nut-based desserts, baked cheesecake, pecan tart or crème brûlée, where the wine’s caramel and dried fruit character can echo the richness of the dish. It also works exceptionally well with mature hard cheeses, blue cheese and roasted nuts, while the freshness on the palate prevents sweeter pairings from becoming overly heavy. Slightly chilled, it makes an excellent after-dinner wine on its own.
