Villion Chardonnay 2024

Villion Family Wines is a boutique South African producer founded by winemaker Chris Villion, whose focus is on expressing vineyard character through careful, minimal-intervention winemaking. The Villion Chardonnay 2024 is sourced entirely from Elgin, one of South Africa's coolest wine-growing regions. The area's high altitude, cool climate and extended ripening season help preserve natural acidity while allowing Chardonnay to develop concentrated fruit and refined structure. The grapes are hand-harvested, with a combination of whole-bunch and gently crushed fruit. Natural fermentation takes place in French Burgundian oak barrels, where the wine spends around 11 months maturing. Partial malolactic fermentation and restrained use of new oak add texture and complexity without overshadowing the freshness and mineral character that make Elgin Chardonnay so distinctive. Colour: Bright straw gold with brilliant clarity and youthful luminosity. Nose: Ripe Golden Delicious apple, yellow pear and pineapple lead the aromas, followed by mandarin citrus, buttered toast, subtle vanilla, crushed stone and a gentle saline note. Palate: Richly textured yet lively, with flavours of orchard fruit and citrus layered over a creamy mouthfeel. French oak contributes hints of toasted spice and gentle nuttiness, while fresh acidity keeps the wine focused and energetic throughout. Finish: Long and persistent, finishing with lingering citrus, subtle oak spice and a clean mineral freshness that invites another sip.
