Strandveld Vineyards sits near Cape Agulhas in the Elim region, where strong Atlantic winds, cool temperatures and mineral-rich soils create one of South Africa’s most distinctive maritime wine environments. The name “Strandveld” refers to the rugged coastal landscape surrounding Africa’s southern tip - an area shaped by sea mist, coastal fynbos and dramatic weather patterns.
The Strandveld Navigator 2022 reflects the estate’s Rhône-inspired approach to blending, combining Shiraz, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Viognier to balance depth with freshness. Fruit is harvested in stages as each variety reaches optimal ripeness, with portions co-fermented before ageing in French oak barrels for around 20 months. The result is a wine that feels layered and refined while still clearly expressing its cool-climate coastal origin.

Deep ruby red with a bright, youthful edge.
Nose:
Black plum, blackberry and dark cherry aromas lead the way, followed by cracked black pepper, cloves and subtle floral notes. Gentle oak ageing adds hints of dark chocolate, tobacco leaf and dried herbs.
Palate:
The Strandveld Navigator 2022 has a smooth but structured palate, with ripe dark fruit balanced by lively acidity and savoury complexity. Shiraz brings spice and depth, Grenache adds red berry lift and fine tannins, while the small Viognier component contributes texture and perfume. The maritime influence keeps the wine focused and fresh rather than overly rich.
Finish:
Long and savoury, with lingering notes of plum skin, spice and a touch of cocoa powder.
- Food Pairing : The savoury spice and firm structure of Strandveld Navigator 2022 make it an excellent match for slow-cooked lamb shoulder, grilled ribeye steak or rosemary roast chicken. Its freshness also works beautifully with rich tomato-based dishes like beef ragù or hearty lasagne, while the peppery Shiraz character complements venison or springbok particularly well. Mature hard cheeses and smoky chargrilled vegetables are equally at home alongside this cool-climate Rhône-style blend.
