Sieraad is a limited-release wine made by winemaker Gary Baumgarten, with the wines rooted in the Helderberg area of Stellenbosch. The vineyards lie on the lower Helderberg slopes, where cooling ocean breezes moderate the growing conditions. The Syrah is planted in distinctive Table Mountain Sandstone, a terroir that suits the variety particularly well by encouraging wines with freshness, spice and structure. The Sieraad Syrah 2022 is made in small quantities with a deliberately hands-on approach. The grapes are hand-picked before fermentation in open cement tanks, allowing the fruit and site to take centre stage. The result is a Stellenbosch Syrah with a cooler-climate character: dark fruit is balanced by white pepper, savoury spice and a more restrained, elegant structure. Sieraad describes the 2022 as a true expression of its Helderberg roots and recommends enjoying it now or ageing it through 2030.
Colour: Deep ruby red with a youthful, concentrated appearance.
Nose: Delicate white pepper and savoury spice lead into aromas of dark berries and ripe plum. There is a subtle earthy character beneath the fruit, giving the wine a distinctly savoury edge.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied, with concentrated dark-fruit flavours and a smooth, supple texture. Fine tannins provide structure without making the wine feel heavy, while fresh acidity keeps the palate lively. White pepper and gentle spice add complexity and give the wine a distinctly cool-climate Syrah character.
Finish: Long and savoury, with dark fruit, white pepper and subtle spice lingering on the palate
- Food Pairing : Sieraad Syrah 2022 has the freshness, peppery character and supple tannins to work particularly well with grilled steak, lamb chops, slow-roasted lamb, venison and hearty mushroom dishes. It is also a natural partner for a South African braai, where its dark fruit and savoury spice complement smoky, charred meat while the acidity keeps the overall pairing fresh rather than heavy.
