Mullineux Syrah 2023
Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines, founded by Chris and Andrea Mullineux, has become one of the defining producers of the Swartland. Their focus is on expressing the region’s diverse soils - granite, schist and iron - through careful vineyard selection and minimal intervention in the cellar.
The Mullineux Syrah is sourced from multiple sustainably farmed vineyards across the Swartland, each contributing a different structural and aromatic element. Fruit is hand-harvested, largely whole-bunch fermented, and aged in large-format French oak to build texture without overwhelming the wine. Bottling is done unfined and unfiltered, preserving both character and nuance.
The result is a Syrah that reflects place over power - structured, aromatic and grounded in the rugged Swartland landscape.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a bright, slightly translucent edge.
Nose:
Perfumed aromas of blackberry and plum lead, followed by violet, black olive and a savoury, slightly meaty note. Subtle spice and fynbos add complexity.
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied with a fine, layered texture. Dark and red fruit flavours are balanced by fresh acidity and firm, polished tannins. There’s a savoury core running through the palate, with spice and mineral notes adding depth without heaviness.
Finish:
Long and structured, with lingering spice, dark fruit and a dry, earthy edge.
- Food Pairing : Mullineux Syrah 2023 pairs well with dishes that mirror its savoury depth and structure. It’s a natural fit for grilled lamb, especially rosemary-infused cuts, where the wine’s herbal and spice notes echo the flavours on the plate. It also works beautifully with venison or slow-cooked beef, where its tannins and acidity balance richness. For a more casual option, try it with smoky braai dishes or aubergine-based meals, where the wine’s earthy character and freshness keep everything in harmony.
