Mullineux Syrah 2023

Mullineux and Leeu Family Wines, founded by Chris and Andrea Mullineux, has become one of the defining producers of the Swartland. Their focus is on expressing the region's diverse soils - granite, schist and iron - through careful vineyard selection and minimal intervention in the cellar. The Mullineux Syrah is sourced from multiple sustainably farmed vineyards across the Swartland, each contributing a different structural and aromatic element. Fruit is hand-harvested, largely whole-bunch fermented, and aged in large-format French oak to build texture without overwhelming the wine. Bottling is done unfined and unfiltered, preserving both character and nuance. The result is a Syrah that reflects place over power - structured, aromatic and grounded in the rugged Swartland landscape. Colour: Deep ruby with a bright, slightly translucent edge. Nose: Perfumed aromas of blackberry and plum lead, followed by violet, black olive and a savoury, slightly meaty note. Subtle spice and fynbos add complexity. Palate: Medium- to full-bodied with a fine, layered texture. Dark and red fruit flavours are balanced by fresh acidity and firm, polished tannins. There's a savoury core running through the palate, with spice and mineral notes adding depth without heaviness. Finish: Long and structured, with lingering spice, dark fruit and a dry, earthy edge.
