Meerlust Cabernet Sauvignon 2022
Set on the coastal plains of Stellenbosch, Meerlust Estate benefits from cooling maritime influences and well-drained alluvial soils that favour structure and slow ripening. Established in 1693, the estate is one of South Africa’s most historically significant properties, with a long-standing reputation for producing age-worthy, classically styled wines.
The winemaking approach leans toward an Old-World sensibility - restrained extraction, careful oak integration, and a focus on site expression rather than overt ripeness. Grapes are typically hand-harvested, with maturation in French oak to build structure without overshadowing the fruit. The result is Cabernet Sauvignon that reflects both place and heritage: composed, layered, and built for longevity.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a youthful garnet edge, indicating both concentration and early development.
Nose:
Blackcurrant and dark plum lead, followed by cedar, tobacco leaf, and a hint of graphite. Subtle notes of dried herbs and spice add complexity as the wine opens.
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied with a firm but refined tannin structure. The fruit profile mirrors the nose - cassis and dark berries - supported by fresh acidity and well-integrated oak. There’s a savoury edge that keeps the wine grounded and balanced rather than fruit driven.
Finish:
Long and structured, with lingering notes of black fruit, cedar, and a gentle earthy dryness.
- Food Pairing : The structure of Meerlust Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 makes it well suited to richer, protein-led dishes. It pairs particularly well with grilled Karoo lamb chops, where the tannins soften against the meat’s natural fat, or a classic beef steak with pepper sauce, which echoes the wine’s savoury spice notes. A slow-cooked oxtail or hearty beef stew also works beautifully, allowing the wine’s acidity to cut through richness while complementing its depth. For something simpler, mature hard cheeses offer a satisfying match, balancing intensity with texture.
