Leeu Passant Stellenbosch Chardonnay 2024
Leeu Passant Stellenbosch Chardonnay comes from a remarkable vineyard high on the Helderberg Mountain at around 400 metres above sea level and close to False Bay. The combination of elevation, deep loam-rich soils and cooling maritime breezes from the Atlantic allows the Chardonnay to ripen slowly while retaining the naturally high acidity and freshness that define the site. The wine is made by Andrea Mullineux and reflects Leeu Passant's focus on exceptional South African vineyard sites and traditional, low-intervention winemaking. The 2024 grapes were hand harvested and whole-bunch pressed before spontaneous fermentation in French oak. The wine matured for 12 months in 225-litre French oak barrels, 30% of which were new, followed by a further 11 months in second- and third-fill barriques. This lengthy maturation builds texture and complexity while keeping the vineyard's freshness firmly in focus.
Colour:Â Bright straw-gold with a youthful, luminous appearance.
Nose:Â Fragrant aromas of citrus and white peach mingle with blossom, fresh herbs and subtle vanilla. Gentle reduction and a hint of oak-derived nuttiness add complexity without dominating the fruit.Â
Palate:Â Poised and concentrated, with clean citrus and stone-fruit flavours carried by striking acidity. The texture is generous and finely layered, with subtle lees and oak complexity adding depth. A gently savoury, mineral quality emerges towards the middle of the palate, giving the wine both precision and substance.
Finish:Â Long, dry and pithy, with lingering citrus, stone fruit, herbs and a distinctive mineral freshness.
- Food Pairing : Leeu Passant Stellenbosch Chardonnay 2024 has the acidity, texture and concentration to work beautifully with richer seafood and poultry dishes. Try it with roast chicken, grilled or pan-fried line fish, prawns with garlic butter, scallops or creamy mushroom and chicken pasta. Its bright acidity cuts through richer sauces, while the citrus, stone-fruit and subtle savoury notes complement both seafood and gently roasted flavours.
