Leeu Passant Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon 2024
Leeu Passant Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon is made by Mullineux & Leeu Passant from a cool site on the Helderberg in Stellenbosch. The vineyard sits at around 300 metres above sea level on iron- and granite-rich slopes of the Helderberg Mountain, where the cooler conditions help Cabernet Sauvignon develop slowly while retaining freshness and aromatic detail. This combination of elevation, mineral-rich soils and Stellenbosch's maritime influence is central to the wine's elegant, refined style. The Leeu Passant philosophy is firmly centred on expressing site and vintage rather than making an overtly powerful Cabernet. The 2024 wine was matured partly in 500-litre French oak barrels, including approximately one-third new oak, before spending extended time in larger-format oak. The approach gives the wine texture and structure while allowing the fruit, acidity and distinctive Helderberg character to remain at the forefront.
Colour: Deep ruby with a youthful garnet-purple edge.
Nose: Aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and dark cherry lead into violets, fresh herbs and subtle graphite. There is a gentle savoury, leafy character that adds complexity without obscuring the ripe dark fruit.
Palate: Medium-bodied and precise, with clear black and red berry flavours supported by lively acidity and fine-grained tannins. The palate is fresh and energetic rather than heavy, with a subtle mineral quality and restrained oak adding depth. The structure suggests a wine that will become increasingly complex with bottle age.
Finish: Long and dry, with cassis, dark berries, herbs and a lingering mineral freshness.
- Food Pairing : Leeu Passant Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon 2024 is an excellent partner for grilled or roasted red meats, particularly beef fillet, rib-eye or lamb. It also works beautifully with venison, slow-cooked beef short ribs or a rich mushroom dish. The wine's fresh acidity cuts through richer meats and sauces, while its fine tannins and cassis, herbal and mineral character complement grilled, roasted and savoury flavours.
