De Meye is a small, family-run estate tucked into the Stellenbosch winelands, where a focus on simplicity and hands-on farming shapes the wines. The vineyards benefit from a mix of decomposed granite and clay soils, contributing both structure and freshness, while the broader Stellenbosch climate allows for even ripening and varietal clarity.

The winemaking philosophy is deliberately low-intervention - careful vineyard work, hand-harvesting, and minimal handling in the cellar. Oak is used with restraint, aiming to frame the wine rather than dominate it. The result is a Syrah that leans toward a more honest, site-driven expression: balanced, lightly savoury, and approachable without losing structure.

Colour:
Deep ruby with a bright, youthful edge.

Nose:
Ripe red and black berries - plum and raspberry - layered with black pepper, subtle spice, and a hint of fynbos. A light smoky note adds depth.

Palate:
Medium-bodied with soft, fine tannins and a smooth texture. The fruit is juicy but controlled, supported by gentle spice and fresh acidity. There’s a savoury undertone that adds interest without making the wine feel heavy.

Finish:
Clean and moderately long, with lingering spice, red fruit, and a soft, dry finish.

  • Food Pairing : De Meye Syrah 2023 pairs well with relaxed, flavourful dishes that echo its balance of fruit and spice. It’s a natural fit for a braai — think grilled lamb chops or boerewors - where the wine’s peppery notes complement the char. It also works nicely with roast chicken, especially with herbs, or a simple beef burger. For a lighter option, try it with smoky grilled vegetables or a mushroom-based dish, which bring out the wine’s subtle savoury character without overpowering its medium-bodied style.
