Zevenwacht Z Collection Syrah 2022 (Diners)
Shiraz / Syrah
Description
Zevenwacht Wine Estate, owned by the Johnson family, lies on the Stellenbosch Wine Route with vineyards extending into the Polkadraai Hills - an area increasingly recognised for producing refined, cooler-climate Syrah. The estate combines a long heritage with a progressive outlook, focusing on conservation, site expression, and careful vineyard management.
The Z Collection represents Zevenwacht’s more focused, small-batch wines, and this Syrah is drawn from south-westerly facing slopes between 230 and 250 metres above sea level. Decomposed granite soils and maritime influence help retain freshness while building structure. In the cellar, a mix of whole-bunch fermentation, carbonic maceration, and gentle oak ageing in large-format foudres allows the wine to develop complexity while keeping the fruit and spice clearly defined.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a bright, youthful edge.
Nose:
Expressive and lifted, showing blackberry and raspberry fruit layered with white pepper and cinnamon spice. Subtle floral and savoury notes add complexity.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with a polished, structured feel. Dark berry fruit carries through, supported by fine, peppery tannins and balanced acidity. The use of whole bunch and large oak adds texture and a gentle savoury depth without heaviness.
Finish:
Long and lightly spiced, with lingering dark fruit and a dry, peppery edge.

Zevenwacht Z Collection Syrah 2022 (Diners)
- Food Pairing : Zevenwacht Z Collection Syrah 2022 pairs naturally with richly flavoured, savoury dishes. It works particularly well with venison or springbok, where the wine’s peppery structure complements gamey depth. Lamb chops on the braai or slow-roasted beef also suit the wine’s balance of fruit and tannin, while dishes with warming spices - such as a pepper-crusted steak or Moroccan-style aubergine - echo the Syrah’s spice profile and enhance its layered character.
