Wolfburn Small Batch 458 Whisky
Whiskey : Malt
Description
The Wolfburn Distillery stands on Scotland’s far-northern mainland, a modern revival of a 19th-century namesake. Since reopening in 2013 in the windswept port town of Thurso, it has built a reputation for punchy, expressive single malts born from small copper stills and thoughtful cask choices. The Batch No. 458 release is the seventh in Wolfburn’s small-batch series - a marriage of two distinct maturation paths. Half of the spirit spent seven years in first-fill Pedro Ximénez sherry butts, imparting deep sweet fruit, while the balance matured in first-fill bourbon barrels, bringing lighter vanilla and oak influence with just a whisper of peat-smoke influence. The result is a whisky that delivers layered depth and an approachable intensity all at once.
Appearance: Deep amber-gold with a sheen of viscosity that hints at its robust cask heritage.
Nose: Rich and inviting, with aromas of treacle, espresso and dark molasses leading the way, accompanied by notes of dried cherries, baking spice and subtle bonfire smoke.
Palate: Full and plush, weaving hazelnut and almond flavours with clove and deeper dried fruit sweetness. The light peat smoke from the bourbon-matured element sits behind the spice, giving a soft complexity without overwhelming the core fruit and oak notes.
Finish: A lasting warmth where treacle sweetness and baking spice stay present, joined by a gentle, lingering trace of smoke as the palate slowly fades.

Wolfburn Small Batch 458 Whisky
- Food Pairing : Wolfburn Batch No. 458 is ideal as a contemplative dram at the end of a meal or as a showpiece in a whisky flight. Enjoy it neat in a tulip-shaped glass to open those deep treacle and spice aromas, or add a few drops of water to coax out subtler layers of dried fruit. On the table, pair this whisky with dark chocolate truffles or dried figs to echo its sherry-rich sweetness, or match with aged almonds and pecan pie for a complementary nutty warmth. For a savoury contrast, try smoked cheddar or charcuterie, where the whisky’s gentle smoke and spice enhance robust flavours without overpowering them.
- Drink before: Ready to enjoy now. Like most small-batch releases from younger distilleries, it’s crafted for immediate character rather than long-term ageing, though a few years in a cool, dark spot may allow wood influence to knit further with spirit.
