Waterkloof Syrah 2023
Shiraz / Syrah
Description
Waterkloof Estate is situated high on the Schapenberg hills overlooking False Bay, where cooling ocean breezes and elevated vineyards create naturally fresh, structured wines. The estate has become known for its biodynamic farming philosophy and low-intervention approach, focusing on healthy soils, natural balance and site-driven winemaking.
The Waterkloof Syrah 2023 reflects both the maritime climate and the estate’s restrained style. Grapes are sourced from organically farmed vineyards rooted in decomposed granite soils, with careful vineyard management aimed at preserving purity and freshness rather than excessive ripeness. Fermentation includes a portion of whole bunches to build aromatic complexity and structure, while maturation in older French oak keeps the focus on fruit and spice rather than overt wood influence.
Colour:
Deep ruby with vibrant purple edges.
Nose:
Blackberry, black cherry and plum aromas are layered with cracked black pepper, violets and dried herbs. Subtle smoky notes and hints of olive tapenade add savoury complexity.
Palate:
The Waterkloof Syrah 2023 is medium-bodied with fine tannins and bright natural acidity giving the wine lift and energy. Dark berry fruit is balanced by pepper spice, herbal detail and a distinctly savoury edge. The cooler coastal influence keeps the palate focused and elegant rather than overly ripe or heavy.
Finish:
Long and refined, with lingering spice, dark fruit and mineral freshness carrying through the finish.

Waterkloof Syrah 2023
- Food Pairing : The savoury character and natural freshness of Waterkloof Syrah 2023 make it particularly well suited to flame-grilled meats and earthy winter dishes. It pairs beautifully with roast lamb, venison pie or pepper-crusted steak, where the wine’s spice and acidity cut through richness without overpowering the food. Smoky aubergine dishes, mushroom risotto and chargrilled vegetables also work exceptionally well, highlighting the Syrah’s herbal and mineral complexity.
