Waterford Antigo 2020 Magnum 1.5L
Bordeaux Blend
Description
Waterford Estate is situated on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain in Stellenbosch, an area long recognised for producing some of South Africa’s most refined Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines. The estate has built its reputation on wines that emphasise vineyard character, balance and structure rather than sheer power.
The name “Antigo” refers to the distinctive red clay soils in which the core Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard is planted. These richer clay-based soils produce a softer, more plush expression of Cabernet Sauvignon than the firmer granite-driven styles often associated with the region. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented as whole berries before the wine spends 20 months maturing in French oak barrels, allowing the tannins to integrate slowly while preserving freshness and detail. In magnum format, the wine develops even more gradually, adding further complexity and longevity over time.
Colour:
Deep ruby with garnet edges and impressive density in the glass.
Nose:
Red currant, black cherry and cassis lead the aromatics, followed by notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, graphite and subtle violet perfume. Oak influence adds hints of spice and creamy vanilla without dominating the fruit.
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied with layered dark berry fruit and fine, rounded tannins. The red clay soils bring a softer, more generous texture, while the Helderberg freshness keeps the wine focused and composed. There is depth and concentration here, but the style remains elegant rather than heavy.
Finish:
Long and savoury with lingering notes of blackcurrant, cedar, dried herbs and gentle oak spice.

Waterford Antigo 2020 Magnum 1.5L
- Food Pairing : Waterford Antigo 2020 Magnum 1.5L is particularly well suited to slow-cooked and richly flavoured dishes. Roast leg of lamb, beef short ribs, venison pie or mushroom-and-thyme casserole all work beautifully with the wine’s layered dark fruit and polished tannin structure. The freshness from the Helderberg terroir prevents the wine from feeling overly weighty, while the savoury cedar and tobacco notes complement grilled and roasted flavours especially well. A mature hard cheese like Gruyère or aged cheddar also makes an excellent match as the wine develops further in bottle.
