Warwick Black Lady Pinotage 2023 (Top 10)
Pinotage
Description
Warwick Wine Estate, situated on the slopes of the Simonsberg in Stellenbosch, is one of the Cape’s most established family wine estates. The property became particularly well known during the years under Norma Ratcliffe, often referred to as the “First Lady of Wine”, whose influence helped shape Warwick’s reputation for elegant, food-friendly wines with a strong sense of place.
The Black Lady Pinotage 2023 takes its name from one of the black eagles that historically nested on the estate and reflects Warwick’s modern approach to South Africa’s signature grape. Stellenbosch’s combination of decomposed granite soils, warm days and cooling afternoon breezes allows Pinotage to ripen fully while retaining freshness and structure. Careful extraction and restrained oak handling help preserve purity of fruit and soften the variety’s naturally robust character, resulting in a wine that feels polished, balanced and easy to enjoy.
Colour:
Deep ruby red with youthful purple highlights.
Nose:
Ripe blackberry, plum and black cherry aromas are layered with notes of vanilla, sweet spice and roasted coffee bean. Subtle hints of smoke and dried herbs add savoury complexity.
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied, with juicy dark berry fruit balanced by soft tannins and fresh acidity. The palate shows flavours of mulberry, cherry compote and cocoa, supported by gentle oak spice and a lightly earthy undertone. The texture is rounded and approachable without becoming overly rich.
Finish:
Smooth and lingering, with notes of dark fruit, mocha and subtle spice carrying through the finish.

Warwick Black Lady Pinotage 2023 (Top 10)
- Food Pairing : Warwick The Black Lady Pinotage 2023 pairs comfortably with relaxed South African favourites and smoky braai flavours. Grilled boerewors, sticky pork ribs or flame-grilled chicken all work well with the wine’s ripe fruit and soft spice profile. The freshness in the palate also helps balance richer dishes like bobotie or beef burgers with mature cheddar, while earthy mushroom dishes complement the wine’s savoury undertones particularly well.
