Walker Bay Llyswen Syrah / Shiraz 2022 (Diners)
Shiraz / Syrah
Description
The Walker Bay Llyswen Syrah / Shiraz 2022 comes from the cool-climate vineyards of Walker Bay, where ocean influence plays a defining role in the style of the wine. Strong maritime breezes and slower ripening conditions help preserve freshness and aromatic detail while allowing the fruit to develop savoury depth and fine structure.
“Llyswen” reflects a thoughtful, restrained approach to Syrah - leaning more toward the peppery, savoury elegance associated with Old World expressions than heavily extracted, overtly ripe styles. The vineyards are planted on well-draining soils that encourage concentration without sacrificing balance, and careful oak maturation adds texture rather than dominance. The result is a wine that feels composed, site-driven and distinctly Walker Bay in character.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a youthful purple edge in the glass.
Nose:
Blackberry, plum and dark cherry lead the aromatics, followed by cracked black pepper, dried herbs and subtle notes of smoked meat and cedar. There’s a gentle floral lift that adds freshness and complexity.
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied with a smooth, layered texture. The dark berry fruit is supported by fine tannins and bright acidity, giving the wine energy without feeling heavy. Savoury spice, olive tapenade and a touch of oak spice add depth while keeping the fruit firmly in focus.
Finish:
Long and dry, with lingering black pepper, dark fruit and earthy spice notes carrying through the finish.

- Food Pairing : The savoury character and fine tannin structure of the Walker Bay Llyswen Syrah / Shiraz 2022 make it especially versatile with food. It pairs naturally with flame-grilled lamb chops, beef short rib or slow-roasted Karoo lamb, where the wine’s peppery spice complements the richness of the meat. For something less hearty, try it with duck, mushroom risotto or chargrilled aubergine dishes, which echo the wine’s earthy and herbal notes. The fresh acidity also helps cut through smoky braai flavours without overwhelming lighter sides or sauces.
