Villiera Bushvine Gamay Noir 2022
Gamay Noir
Description
Villiera Wines has built a reputation for combining innovation with long-term environmental stewardship. Family-owned since the early 1980s, the estate is particularly respected for its sparkling wines and sustainability initiatives, including wildlife conservation and regenerative farming practices across the property.
While Gamay Noir remains uncommon in South Africa, Villiera has quietly become one of the country’s most consistent producers of the variety. The Bushvine Gamay Noir is sourced from low-yielding bush vines grown in Stellenbosch soils with good natural drainage and cooling afternoon breezes that help preserve acidity and aromatic freshness.
The winemaking approach focuses on retaining the grape’s vibrant fruit profile while adding texture and structure through gentle extraction and restrained oak usage. Rather than mimicking Beaujolais too closely, Villiera’s interpretation leans into a slightly riper Cape expression - generous in fruit, savoury underneath and highly drinkable.
Colour:
Bright ruby red with a translucent crimson edge.
Nose:
Lifted aromas of red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry lead the nose, followed by hints of violet, cinnamon, dried herbs and subtle earthiness.
Palate:
Medium-bodied and supple, with juicy red berry fruit balanced by fresh acidity and soft tannins. The wine shows more depth than many lighter Gamay styles, offering layers of cranberry, plum and gentle spice while still maintaining energy and brightness.
Finish:
Fresh and persistent, with lingering red fruit, savoury spice and a lightly earthy note.
