Vergelegen Estate, located in Somerset West within Stellenbosch, is one of South Africa’s historic wine properties, with roots dating back to 1700. Its vineyards stretch up the slopes of the Schaapenberg, where proximity to False Bay brings persistent sea breezes that naturally cool the vines and slow ripening.
The Wild Winds Sauvignon Blanc 2024 takes its name from these exposed, wind-swept sites. The vineyards are among the highest on the estate, planted on southerly-facing slopes where strong coastal winds create natural stress, concentrating flavour while preserving acidity. This results in a style that leans toward freshness and mineral precision rather than overt richness.
Winemaking follows a clean, modern approach: hand-harvested fruit, gentle pressing, and fermentation in stainless steel to retain varietal clarity. Lees contact is used to soften the edges, adding subtle texture without compromising the wine’s bright, coastal character.

Pale straw with a bright, youthful clarity.
Nose:
Guava and honeydew melon lead, followed by citrus zest and a light herbal lift. A subtle flinty note adds a distinctly coastal edge.
Palate:
Light- to medium-bodied with a crisp, linear structure. Tropical fruit and citrus carry through, supported by vibrant acidity and a fine mineral streak that gives the wine focus and tension.
Finish:
Fresh and persistent, with lingering citrus and a gentle saline note that reflects its maritime origin.
