Vergelegen Estate, located in Somerset West in Stellenbosch, is one of South Africa’s most historic wine properties, dating back to 1700. Its vineyards lie just a few kilometres from False Bay, where cooling ocean breezes moderate the warm climate and help preserve freshness and structure in the fruit.
The Vergelegen Estate Red 2022 is a classic Bordeaux-style blend, sourced from vineyards across the estate’s diverse sites, particularly warmer north- and north-west-facing slopes that deliver ripe tannins and concentrated fruit. Winemaking is careful and considered: each varietal is fermented separately in stainless steel before maturation in French oak, followed by blending to achieve balance and consistency. The result reflects both the estate’s heritage and a modern, site-driven approach to Stellenbosch reds.

Deep ruby with a dense core and a youthful garnet edge.
Nose:
Blackcurrant and cassis lead, supported by red berry notes and subtle hints of cedar, pencil shavings, and spice.
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied with a structured but approachable feel. Dark fruit sits at the centre, layered with savoury notes and gentle oak spice. The tannins are firm yet polished, giving shape without heaviness, while balanced acidity keeps the wine focused.
Finish:
Long and dry, with lingering cassis, spice, and a refined, slightly savoury close.
