Tokara Straw Wine Chenin Blanc 2023
Chenin Blanc
Description
Set along the dramatic Helshoogte Pass in Stellenbosch, Tokara Wine Estate is known for producing wines that combine modern precision with a strong sense of place. The vineyards sit on the slopes of the Simonsberg, where decomposed granite soils and cooling maritime influence from False Bay create ideal conditions for balanced grape ripening.
The Tokara Straw Wine Chenin Blanc 2023 comes from a single vineyard block planted on these granite-based soils at around 425 metres above sea level. Grapes are harvested by hand and then carefully dried on racks for three to five weeks, concentrating sugars, flavours and acidity before pressing.
Once sufficiently desiccated, the grapes are gently pressed to release a rich, syrupy juice which ferments slowly over several weeks. The fermentation naturally stops once sweetness, acidity and alcohol find equilibrium, creating a classic straw wine style: intensely flavoured yet balanced by vibrant natural acidity.
Colour:
Brilliant deep gold in the glass, reflecting the wine’s concentrated style.
Nose:
Intense aromas of sundried apricot, pineapple syrup and honeyed stone fruit, with subtle hints of caramelised sugar.
Palate:
Rich and viscous with flavours of apricot preserve, barley sugar and candied citrus. Despite the sweetness, a firm line of acidity keeps the wine focused and prevents it from feeling heavy.
Finish:
Long and luxurious, with lingering notes of dried fruit and honey balanced by refreshing acidity.

- Food Pairing : The sweetness and vibrant acidity of Tokara Straw Wine Chenin Blanc 2023 make it particularly well suited to both savoury and dessert pairings. It works beautifully with foie gras or duck liver pâté, where the wine’s richness mirrors the dish while the acidity cuts through the fat. Classic desserts such as crème brûlée or baked cheesecake also pair naturally, as the caramelised flavours echo the wine’s notes of apricot and barley sugar. For a local twist, try it with mature blue cheese or a creamy Cape-style malva pudding - the contrast between sweetness and savoury depth creates a balanced finish to a meal.
