Description
Thelema’s Sutherland range is rooted in Elgin, a region known for its cooler climate and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean - just a few kilometres away. These conditions slow ripening, allowing Pinot Noir to develop aromatic detail and natural acidity without excessive weight.
Originally an apple orchard, the Sutherland vineyards are planted on Tukulu and Glenrosa soils, which provide good drainage and contribute to the wine’s structure and finesse. In the cellar, the approach is careful and restrained: gentle handling of whole berries, fermentation in stainless steel, and around 10 months in French oak (with only a small portion new) to support, rather than dominate, the fruit.
The result is a Pinot Noir that leans towards clarity and elegance - a style that reflects both Elgin’s cool climate and a more classical interpretation of the varietal.
Colour:
Bright ruby with a translucent edge, typical of a lighter, cool-climate Pinot Noir.
Nose:
Ripe strawberry and cherry lead, followed by subtle spice and a gentle earthy note. Hints of vanilla and dried herbs emerge with time in the glass.
Palate:
Light- to medium-bodied with a smooth, finely textured mouthfeel. Red berry fruit - raspberry and wild strawberry - sits at the core, supported by fresh acidity that gives the wine lift and energy. Tannins are soft and unobtrusive, allowing the fruit and savoury nuances to remain in focus.
Finish:
Clean and refined, with lingering red fruit and a subtle earthy spice on the tail.
