The Loft Cape Blend 2023 (Diners)
Blend : Red
Description
The Loft range from Meerendal Wine Estate focuses on approachable wines that highlight classic South African varieties while remaining easy to enjoy and food friendly. The Cape Blend style is uniquely South African, typically built around Pinotage - the country’s signature grape - supported by Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to add structure and depth.
Sourced from vineyards across the Western Cape, the grapes benefit from the region’s Mediterranean climate, where warm sunny days allow full ripening while cooler evening temperatures help preserve freshness. This balance produces fruit with good concentration while maintaining bright acidity.
For The Loft Cape Blend 2023, the different varieties were fermented separately to capture their individual character before blending. The wine spent a short period in oak to soften the tannins and add gentle spice without overshadowing the fruit-driven style.
Colour:
Deep ruby with vibrant purple highlights, youthful and bright in the glass.
Nose:
Aromatic notes of ripe plum, black cherry and mulberry lead the way, followed by hints of vanilla, cocoa and soft baking spice.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with juicy dark fruit at the core. Pinotage brings flavours of plum and blackberry, while Cabernet Sauvignon adds structure and subtle herbal notes. Merlot rounds out the blend with softness and a smooth texture. The tannins are supple and approachable, making the wine easy to enjoy.
Finish:
Soft and lingering, with ripe berry fruit and a touch of gentle oak spice.

- Food Pairing : The approachable fruit profile of The Loft Cape Blend 2023 makes it a versatile partner for relaxed meals. It pairs particularly well with braaied boerewors or flame-grilled burgers, where the juicy fruit and soft tannins complement the smoky richness of the meat. Barbecue chicken or sticky pork ribs also work well, as the wine’s ripe berry character balances sweet and savoury flavours. For a vegetarian option, try it with roasted Mediterranean vegetables or mushroom pizza, where the earthy notes play nicely with the blend’s dark fruit and gentle spice.
