The High Road Directors Reserve 2019
Bordeaux Blend
Description
The High Road is a boutique Stellenbosch producer focused almost exclusively on Bordeaux-style blends, sourcing fruit from carefully selected vineyard sites across the region. Working with top vineyard parcels and guided by a consistent, detail-driven philosophy, the aim is to express Stellenbosch terroir through a classical lens - structure, balance and ageability rather than overt ripeness.
Â
The Directors Reserve represents the pinnacle of this approach. Each varietal is vinified and matured separately in French oak (typically around 20 months), allowing precise blending decisions that prioritise harmony and longevity. The result is a wine that leans into classic structure and refinement, with Stellenboschâs sun and soils providing depth and concentration beneath that framework.
Â
Colour:
Deep garnet with a dense core, showing both intensity and early maturity at the rim.
Â
Nose:
Blackcurrant and blueberry lead, layered with cigar box, pencil shavings and subtle spice. Notes of vanilla, dried herbs and a faint smoky edge develop with air.
Â
Palate:
Full-bodied and structured, with a firm tannin backbone. Dark fruit - cassis, blackberry - sits at the centre, supported by cedar, tobacco and hints of graphite. The texture is powerful but controlled, with a composed, layered mid-palate.
Â
Finish:
Long and dry, tapering into savoury notes of herbs, oak spice and lingering dark fruit.

The High Road Directors Reserve 2019
- Food Pairing : The High Road Directors Reserve 2019 calls for richer, protein-led dishes that match its structure and depth. A well-marbled ribeye or beef fillet is a natural fit, with the wineâs tannins softening against the meat while its acidity keeps the palate fresh. Slow-cooked lamb shoulder or venison works equally well, echoing the wineâs savoury, herbal undertones. For something more rustic, a beef short rib or oxtail stew complements its intensity and layered dark fruit, while hard cheeses or a mature cheddar bring out its cedar and tobacco nuances.
